General Feng Shui Guidelines
General Feng Shui Guidelines for the Home

Traditional Chinese Feng Shui is the study of qi/chi - energies in our environment. These are specific to every space, relative to the time when the building was constructed and to the people who are living or working within that space. Feng Shui is also about change, what we do in our environment will affect the outcome of different aspects of our lives.

Here are some general guidelines on your Feng Shui improvements:

1.   Keep the bedroom doors closed at bedtime, which includes the ensuite bathroom door; install a door or curtain if there is no door connecting the two rooms.

2. Sharp corners create Poison Arrows. Avoid Poison Arrows pointing in the direction of where people sleep or work. For new home construction or renovations, plan to have rounded comers on cabinets, walls, low beams and pillars so as not to create any Poison Arrows.

3. Straight lines create Sha (Killing) Qi.  Good feng shui does promote the use of curves both inside and outside a building.

4. When designing new buildings, make sure the doors do not directly line up with one another or large windows, especially with long narrow corridors connecting them.

5. Watch out for the elements of Fire and Water in the bedroom.  Do not sleep against a wall with a toilet, or fireplace/chimney on the other side

6. No moving water and large living plants in the bedroom.

7. No mirrors in the bedroom directly facing the bed.

8. No television or computer in the bedroom.  If they have to be there, cover the screen or monitor before going to sleep or place them inside an armoire with doors closed at bedtime.

9. No mirrors or large structures directly facing the front door.

10. Do not hang wind chimes directly above where people sit or sleep.

11. Do not sit or sleep directly under a ceiling fan or low beam.

12. Do sleep with a solid headboard behind your head.  The shape of the headboard is relative to each  individual.

13. It is advisable to close bedroom windows and curtains before bedtime, especially if the bed is directly underneath a window.

14. Do not sleep at the lower side of a sloping ceiling.

15. Do know red and green are very powerful colors.  Only use where specifically instructed.

16. It is advisable not to sleep in bunk beds - too much oppressive Qi

17. When placing or creating water features, make sure the water flows towards the centre of the house.   Only place moving water where specifically instructed.

18. Keep all interior doors open during the day and keep the bathroom doors closed,  unless specially instructed not to.

19. Keep toilet lids down for health reasons, not that toilets have anything to do with flushing away money luck.

20. Clutter collects bad Qi and obstructs good Qi. Do clear all the clutter both inside and outside the building and not to forget the basements and garages.

21. Maintain Beautiful Forms (structures & colors) both outside and inside.  This does impact the quality of Qi people bring inside the space.

22. Do open windows to let in fresh air at least once a week  to bring the good Qi in and circulate
throughout the space.
